Benfotiamine

Benfotiamine is a synthetic (lab-made) derivative of Thiamine (Vitamin B1). It is fat-soluble, unlike Thiamine HCl, which is water-soluble. It is not approved in the UK or EU as a form of B1, in 2008 an EFSA safety assessment was done and there was insufficient evidence to approve it.

It was added to the Novel Food Catalogue in December 2025 as an unapproved Novel Food.

It is legal in the USA and is a drug/medicine in some other countries.
