Ginkgo biloba (Maidenhair tree) is native to China, it is the last living species in the order Ginkgoales, which first appeared over 290 million years ago. Fossils very similar to the living species, belonging to the genus Ginkgo, extend back to the Middle Jurassic approximately 170 million years ago. The tree was cultivated early in human history and remains commonly planted.

Whilst it is currently listed as " threatened" in the wild, most Ginkgo for supplement use is cultivated on farms or plantations.

The most common Ginkgo extract (50:1) is a powdered extract and it is extracted with water and ethanol. It provides 24% Ginkgo flavone glycosides and 6% Terpine lactones. The Ginkgolic acid content is less than 5 parts per million (last CoA stated 1.2ppm).
